Oct. 27 — Solid waste disposal spending at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla has dropped 30% due to a campus-wide recycling initiative.
The school´s Green Campus Committee received about $22,000 the past few years from the Department of Natural Resources and the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District to build the recycling program, according to the Rolla Daily News.
The money goes toward recycling bins made from 100% recycled plastic that are placed in buildings throughout campus.
Recyclable materials in the college´s waste stream fell from 37% in 2007 to 20% in 2011, leading to $41,538 in yearly savings.
The number of full-time students increased 10% percent during this time, paper reported.
